Foundation of diplomacy relationship between Thai-Japan
Phra Chunla Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua (King Rama V)
Emperor Meiji, Meiji period

After Chokun government preceded the close country policy in 1639 (BC 2182), Japan has stopped contacting with other countries until western countries started colonialism. Brigadier Mathew Perrry from United State closed Uraga estuary by marine in 1853 (BC2396). Therefore, Chokun government needed to open the country again and this finally resulted in the bankruptcy of Chukun government. Japanese emperor returned to has the real power again in Meiji period in 1868 (B.C. 2411) which was the same year that the king Rama V ascend the throne period of Thailand.

Meiji period in Japan and period of King Rama V were accidentally similar in term of many sides of history. Apart from king, King Rama V and King Meiji, had ascended to the throne in the same year, they were in around age. King Rama V was younger than King Meiji only 1 year and passed away in 1910 (B.C. 2453) before King Meiji for 2 years.

Further, it was the period that both Thailand and Japan faced with imperialism of western countries. Therefore, important mission of both kings was similar. That was to proceed the foreign policy intelligently in order to keep freedom and sovereignty of the country while they would develop the country to progress as same as the western countries. Also, in the period of both kings, there was diplomacy relationship to each other again.

However, it took more than 20 years for both countries to start building diplomacy relationship after ascend to the throne. This was because foreign policy of Thailand and Japan still focused on solving problem which occurred with powerful countries from the west in the first time. This caused less chance for both countries to contact with other countries in Asia. Until both countries had made treaty with the west countries, they started to contact to each other. We believed that one main reason was from accordant policy that needed to solve the problem of inequality in the west and they needed to find the alliance in Asia.

Prince of Devawongse Varoprakorn
In 1887 (B.C.2430), during Prince of Devawongse Varoprakorn, minister of foreign come back from the 50th anniversary of ascend the throne celebration of Queen Victoria in London, has visited many countries in Europe and United State and also visited Japan. Japan offered the diplomacy relationship to each other officially, friendship and commerce contract has been signed up on 26 September 1887 (B.C. 2430) at Tokyo. Thailand was the first country that made this contract with Japan. Although this contract contained only the short massage referring to the agreement of both countries that would make the contract of diplomacy exchange and supported trading and marine, this contract was deemed to be the official foundation of relationship between Thailand and Japan.

Japan Government has designated Mr. Manjiro Inagaki as the first ambassador from Japan based in Thailand in March 1987 (B.C. 2441). Later, trading friendship contract, marine and diplomacy between Thailand and Japan has been signed up on 25 February 1989 (B.C. 2441) in Bangkok. After that, King Rama V has assigned Phraya Ritthirong Ronnachet to be the first Thai ambassador based in Japan. In the same year, Thailand has opened Thai embassy in Tokyo for the 5th embassy of Thailand of Thailand in foreign country and it was the first embassy of Thailand in Asia.

Phraya Srisena (Ha Sombatsiri)

In 1941 (B.C. 2484), Thailand has made agreement with Japan to exchange ambassador representative. The embassy in Tokyo was changed from Legation to be embassy and Phraya Srisena (Ha Sombatsiri), ambassador of Thailand has been promoted to be ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Tokyo. This was the first embassy that was found and designated the first ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Thailand.

Since Thailand has developed diplomacy relationship with Japan in 1887 (B.C. 2430), the relationship between Thailand and Japan was progressed in every side, especially the relationship between two dynasties which became closely since the King Rama VI and Her Majesty Queen Rumpaipannee went for visiting Japan in April 1931 (B.C. 2474). This was the first visit to Japan of the king of Thailand.

Later, there were many visits to Japan of the king of Thailand. That mean the king Phummiphn Adrulayadej and Queen Phraborommarachininaj has officially visit Japan in May 1963 (B.C. 2506). After that, the prince of Akihito, the son of king of Japan, and princess of Michiko, his wife, came to official visit Thailand in return in December of the next year. After the King Hirohito passed away in January 1989 (B.C. 2532) and prince of Akihito has ascended the throne, he has come to visit Thailand officially again with Her majesty the queen Michiko in September 1991 (B.C. 2534). This was the first country that came to visit Thailand after being the king and Thailand was the first country that the king of Japan came to visit in the Japanese history. Moreover, both countries had always visited to each other, especially on special occasion of one part.

The relationship and coporation between Thailand and Japan in other sides after founding diplomacy relationship in the first period was to provide technical and academic help from Japan. In the period of King Rama V which was the period that Thailand was developing, Thailand needed to employ foreigners who specialized in each field to be advisor and specialist in a large number. In this project, there were many Japanese such as Mr. Fujiyoshi Masoo who was the advisor in law of Thai government in 1897-1913 (B.C. 2440-2456). Later, he was dessinagted to be ambassador of Japan in Thailand by Japan government in 1920 (B.C. 2463). Mrs. Tetsu Yasui, educational specialist was sent to help Thailand in term of reformation of Thai education and she has one person who found the queen school in 1904 (B.C. 2447). Further, there were many other specialists such as silk treat, medical, engineering and handcraft.

Political relationship was one of close relationship between Thailand and Japan. We can say that both countries had similar international political policy since founding of diplomacy relationship to each other. In the period of fighting with colonialism of western countries, Japan tried hard to expand their own power in Asia region in order to balance the power of those western countries. While Thailand tried to find benefit from Japan to solve the problem of adverse with powerful countries from the west. We can see clearly from situations before and during the World War II. When assembly conference at Geneva on 24 February 1933 (B.C. 2476), they voted Japan to retreat from Manjuria and Thailand was only one country that did not vote and Japan interpreted of showing friendship to Japan.

Besides, when Japan declared war with alliance countries in Great East Asia war, although Thailand placed them as neutral and when Japan landed at Thailand and Thai must join with Japan army, Thailand took such opportunity to negotiate with England and France to return the old part of Thailand. After Japan was defeated the war and Thailand must lose those land part again, it showed the attitude of both parties toward imperialism of the west in that time very well. Recently, Thailand and Japan had close political corporation. Thailand had supported Japan to play the role in political and stability in the country, especially the story related to the west Asia.

Economic relationship between Thailand and Japan has expanded continuously since both countries has started foundation the diplomacy relationship to each other and it can be said that it was the most important in relationship between Thailand and Japan in the present. Economic relationship in the first period was mainly trading relationship. Japanese traders have started running business in Thailand since 1891 (B.C. 2434). There was other business including bank. Later, Japanese stayed in Thailand more and Japanese foundation was found in 1913 (B.C. 2456)
