“Sunthrone Phu” the poet of Rattanakosin

When we referred to “Sunthrone Phu”, only few people did not know about his poetries which remained to be the heritage of the land and it created the form of poem, verse and poetry for next generation novelists. He was named differently such as poet laureate of Rattanakosin, the great poet of Rattanakosin or Great teacher of Siam. His poetry consisted of poem, tale, proverb and Thai verse and those were praised by Association of Science education and United Nation culture organization (UNESCO) and he was praised as a person who has cultural work of the world. On 20th anniversary birthday celebration of Sunthrone Phu on 26 June B.C. 2529, who was the first normal people that has gotten such award, therefore, 26 June of every year became the day of him and 26 June B.C. 2552 was his 223th anniversary birthday of Sunthrone Phu.

History and Poetry of Sunthrone Phu, the Great Poet of the world

Sunthrone Phu was one of important poet of Rattanakosin and had life longer to 4 reigns. He was born on the first reign period and passed away in the 4th reign.

Sunthrone Phu, the most important poet of Rattanakosin, was born on Monday, 26 June B.C. 2329, month 8, year of the horse at 2.00 am at the north area of back palace (Bangkok Noi, Thonburi railway station).

Parent

Father of Sunthrone Phu was Phra Kru Thummarungsri, monk dean of Muang Klang who did not have the real name. He lived in Ban Klum, Kleang district, Rayong province. Mother of Sunthrone Phu was assumed to be the governor in the back palace. His parents had divorce since he was a child. After that, his father became the monk at the forest temple in Banklum sub-district, Klang district and his mother went to be the governor in the back palace and gave herself to be concubine of the princess in the palace.

Education

When he was young, he gave himself to be the royal page in the back palace and lived with his mother. He studied at Wat Cheeprakraw (Wat Sri Sudaram) where was located at the river side of Bangkok Noi. He was educated and enabled to be the clerk, so he has worked in garden treasury department.

Behavior

When he was in young age, he loved with Miss Chan who had worked in the back palace, so he was punished by this reason.

  • B.C. 2349 He was acquitted and turned to meet his father at Meung Klang and he had written Nirat Muangklang when he departed from Muangklang to be the royal page of Phra Choa Prathommawong (the son o f director of the back palace) who was a monk at Wat Rakhung. He had Miss Chan as his wife.
  • B.C. 2350 He saperated from his wife to follow Phra Choa Prathommawong to go to Phra Patthabat. During this time, he wrote Nirat Phrabat
  • B.C. 2359 He has been designated to be government officer in Arluck Department (2nd reign, King Rama II). He became Khun Sunthronevoharn. During being government officer, he was imprisoned because he drunk very much which caused mad. Later, he was acquitted and become teacher of Phrachoa Lookyather Choafah Arporn, the son of king Rama II. In the same time, he was the poetry advisor and served really closely.
  • B.C. 2369 In the period of King Rama III, Sunthrone Phun was accused on alcohol drinking and other issues until he was discharged from the position of Khun Sunthronevoharn. Later, Sunthrone Phu has become a monk at Wat Ratchaburana (Wat Lieb) for 10 years. Then he left the Buddhist monkhood.
  • B.C. 2371 When he went to Phra Nakorn Sri Ayutthaya, he wrote Nirat Phukhaothong. He returned to stay in the Buddhist monastery during the Buddhist lent at Wat Arunratchawararam and moved to Wat Thepthida (write the poem about Phra Chaiyasuriya). When he went to Suphanburi, he wrote Nirat Muang Supan and come to stay at Wat Chetuphon. When he went to Ayutthaya, he wrote Nirat Choafah.
  • B.C. 2378 He left the Buddhist monkhood and gave himself to Phrachoa Lakkananukul.
  • B.C. 2379 When Phrachoa Lakkananukul passed away, Sunthrone Phu did not have anyone to help him. He was very trouble until stayed on the boat to write the book for sale to feed himself.

Later, the sister of Choafah Klomkhun Itsares Rungsan and Klommuan Absornsudathep gave him their kindness. During this time, he wrote complete Phra Apaimani and wrote Singhakraipop, Nirat Phra prathom and Nirat Muangpetch

  • B.C. 2394 He was given the rank of nobility to be Phra Sunthronevoharn, positioned in Chao Klom Phra Arluck, royal palace department and he has been government officer for 4 years after.
  • B.C. 2398 He died with total age of 70 years old.

Skill and knowledge
When considered works of Sunthrone Phu in both writing Nirat and novel poem, he always inserted proverbs, aphorism and comparisons. This showed that Sunthrone Phu read many books until he could take any stories to insert in his works neatly.many parts of Phra Apaimani made us know that Sunthrone Phu had more knowledge about Triphum image book and also ideas to apply in the story such as calling of strange sea fishes and remaining to Phra Rahoo. Further, he had knowledge about literatures in different countries such as China, Indian, Arab, Thai and Cava. Most academicians agreed that Sunthrone Phu has been influenced from Chinese literature named Shaihun, Samkok, Arab literature such as Arab Rati and ideas from bible about story of missionary, the legend of Atlantic. These reflected the influence of those stories mostly hidden in Phra Apaimani.

Sunthrone Phu also had knowledge about astronomy relating to astrology. Sunthrone Phu has mentioned about stars in the language of astrology such as Dao Ruechai or Dao Sumpaothing, Dao Thong, Dao Long, Dao Ka, Dao Hamphee. Moreover, he described about the ancient prediction such as “although the lust was near human, it would die as ghost”.
That Sunthorn Phu had more knowledge was assumed that he could reach the source of important document information which had very less because it was not the long period after the loss of Phra Nakorn Si Ayutthaya. This might be because of the position of Sunthrone Phu. Due to Sunthrone Phu had modern idea as the west people until he was known as “the great poetry”, it was possible that Sunthrone Phu liked to make friendship with many people. He might know with many foreigners and traders from the west. Pramote Tatsanasuwan think that Sunthrone Phu might be able to speak English which was the origin of that Phra Apaimanee and Sinsamut could speak many languages. Also, the sea stories and name of land might be from sailors who told Sunthrone Phu.

Whether Sunthrone Phu knew about oversea from his foreigner friends or not, Sunthrone Phu has described about ultramodern stories that shown his imaginations which was not succeeded in such period. For example, in Phra Apaimani, there was a big marine that can contain the building and made the garden on the marine. Mrs Laweng had sound box which can be played (with electric) or boat of Mora Braham. Sunthrone Phu had been praised as the most famous great poetry of such period as appeared on the book “History of Sunthrone Phu, written by Phraya Pariyut Dhummathara (Pea Talaluck). Such statement was “On the land of Phra Buddha Lertlat Napalai, there were 6 persons who was the great poetry praised by the king who were the King Rama VI, Sunthrone Phu, Mr. Song Jaipak, Phraya Pojjanapimon (Wanrat Thongyou), Klom Khun Si Sunthrone and Phra Naiwai later known as Phraya Krung (Chang Phuek). Those six poetry were always sent to contest..”

One skill of Sunthrone Phu was the specialist in the use of proper word to describe in the content of his works, especially Nirat Poetry. This made the readers see image and feel the voice as if they has joined with his trip. Suntrone Phu also had resourcefulness in writing poetry. It was heard that once Phu monk parked the boat, one villager would like to give him food but he could not pray, Phu monk led the villager to say as poetry.

Otherwise, “Poetry” was divided in to 4 categories which were the imagine poetry. This kind of poet was from imaging of the author. Listening poetry- the author writes poet from what they has heard. Real poetry- the author wrote the story from the real situation and intelligent poetry- the author must be intelligent to write the poem immediately. When considered the skill and knowledge of Sunthrone Phu, we may conclude that Sunthrone Phu was the great poetry who had full of 4 abilities.

Monument and puppet
The first monument of Sunthorn Phu was created at Banklum sub-district, Klang district, Rayong province which was hometown of his father. It was created on 30 December B.C. 2498 which was 100 years anniversary of his death. The ceremony was officially held on 25 May B.C. 2513 within monument contained his poppet of Sunthrone Phu and his hero, Phra Apaimanee. At the front of monument, there was Modkawee 24th.

Also, there was one of Sunthrone Phu monument located at Wat Sri Sudaram because it was the place where he was educated when he was young. Moreover, there was beeswax figure of Sunthrone Phu and Phra Apaimanee shown in Thai beeswax museum in Nakorn Pratom province.

The monk’s house of Sunthron Phu or Sunthrone Phu’s museum was located at Wat Thepthidaram, Mahachai Road, Bangkok. it was the building that was repaired from the house that Sunthrone Phu has lived once he stayed during Buddhist lent. Recently, it is location for association of poetry of Thailand and Sunthrone Phu day activity was held every year.

Poetry work of Sunthron Phu was recently found only some parts of all his works and it loss many his works as well. However, as much as we found, it was enough to call him that “poetry ruffian” who can write poem rapidly. These were the works of Sunthron Phu that we can found recently.

Therefore, to recall the great poetry of the world, Phra Sunthron Voharn or Sunthron Phu who had ability and being the model of writing literature of Thailand which should be praised and maintained as the language heritage of Thai people, the government has specified the date 26 June of every year as Sunthrone Phu day. Also, to praise Sunthrone Phu to be more well-known, the government of the field marshal P. Piboonsongkram has proceeds the monument of Sunthrone Phu at Muang Klang, Rayong province and finished in B.C. 2513. the monument was also the park with the figure of Sunthron Phu sit on the mound and there was the hero from Phra Apaimanee in front of the monument.
