Pra Tapien Bailan
History of Pra Tapien Bailan
To make Pra Tapien Bailan was the oldest career which was done for more than 100 years. it was assumed that Muslim who sailed to sale spices on Chao Phraya River and residing in the ship has invented Pra Tapien firstly made from Bailan (palm leaf). Their inspiration might be from the feel of relationship with river and environment around river and they knew the crap very well. it was made from local material such as coconut leaf and palm leaf. The carp made from palm leaf in the past was not beautiful and big than in the present. The first carp generation was called “ancient fish”. It had small size with 1-3 carps only. Pra Tapien Bailan was always painted with light yellow which was from nature called “Rong” mixed with oil and then inserted with wood to hang. Also, the carp in the past had less than the present.

Pra Tapien Bailan and believe
Pra Tapien Bailan was craftsmanship of Muslim in Wasukri area, Banleam, which has been with Ayutthaya for more than 100 years. it was deemed that Ayutthaya was the biggest place for making Pra Tapien Bailan of Thailand. In the past, it was believed that the carp was the symbol of the prosperity because when the carp was matured was the period that the rice was ready for harvest as the proverb that “the new rice and oily fish”. Due to various believes, people always made the palm carp in different sizes and made it as a bunch on the top of cradle of baby to be auspicious for their baby. This was like to wish the baby to grow with richness as the carp in the harvest period. Some believed that the palm carp was auspicious to make more money and some believe that hanging the palm carp in front of the house shall make happiness and well trading. Moreover, the carp also told about the patient as well. The palm carp was consisted of 6 pieces which were the tent, fish, salt container, globefish, bo leaf and small fish. It had 2 types which were the carp with beautiful pattern for nobility person and normal carp for villager’s child. The palm carp had various patterns as we can see in the present. For palm carp that was made in the king Rama V period, it was known that Luan Yotha who resided near Han bridge, Wang Burapa sub-district, Bangkok, has made it to be more beautiful. Then, it was taken to sell in the temples. Then, people turned to interest in the palm carp. Recently, although there is less people to take it to hang on the baby cradle, it become family industries and make income to the family very well.

The steps to make palm carp

  1. Cut two long palm leaf
  2. Take the first leaf to round your hand for 2 rounds.
  3. Remove the rounded hand out and use another hand to catch it.
  4. Take the second palm leaf to make a half and insert into the first palm leaf.
  5. Take the second palm insert under the first palm at first blank.
  6. Reverse it up and use the second palm leaf insert the blank under and balance it.
  7. Make fin and tail with scissor
  8. Make another compound of palm carp such as tent, fish, salt container, globefish, bo leaf and small fish and paint them with beautiful color.
  9. Take other compound to assemble with the main palm carp to be beautiful bunch.
